Why is Fosamax prescribed?

Fosamax is used by doctors for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, the brittle bone disease, in postmenopausal women. How do I use Fosamax?

For Fosamax to be effective it should be taken with a full glass of plain water first thing in the morning, at least 30 minutes before the first food, beverage, or other medication. Fosamax will be absorbed better, if you can wait more before eating or drinking. It's not recommended to lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking Fosamax and avoid chewing or sucking on the tablet; it can cause mouth sores.

If you forget a dose of Fosamax, do not take a missed dose later in the day. If you are taking Fosamax once a week, take 1 tablet the morning after you remember. Never take 2 tablets on the same day.

What are the potential side effects from Fosamax?

Frequent side effects from Fosamax: Abdominal ache, bone and joint pain, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, muscle pain, nausea.

Less frequent side effects from Fosamax: Difficulty in swallowing, esophageal ulcers, gas, headache, stomach ulcers, vomiting, abdominal distention and acid backup.

Rare side effects from Fosamax: Changes in taste, esophageal blockage or perforation, eye pain, hives, inflammation of the stomach, mouth sores, muscle cramps, rash, skin redness, swollen face and throat.

What should I discuss with my doctor before taking Fosamax?

If the calcium level in your blood is low; If Fosamax causes an allergic reaction; Fosamax is not recommended for women on hormone replacement therapy, or with kidney problems; If you have trouble swallowing or have any digestive disease, Fosamax may cause problems in your esophagus such as inflammation, ulcers, bleeding, and in rare cases, blockage or perforation.

If you are planning to combine aspirin with a Fosamax dose of more than 10 milligrams per day; If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Fosamax is not recommended for nursing mothers.

What is the recommended dose for Fosamax?

To treat Postmenopausal Osteoporosis: One 10-milligram tablet once a day or one 70-milligram tablet once a week. Treatment continues for years.

Prevention of Postmenopausal Osteoporosis: One 5-milligram tablet once a day or one 35-milligram tablet once a week.

To treat Osteoporosis in Men: One 10-milligram tablet once a day or one 70-milligram tablet once a week.

STEROID-INDUCED OSTEOPOROSIS: One 5-milligram tablet once a day, except for postmenopausal women not taking estrogen, who should take one 10-milligram tablet once daily.

To treat Paget's Disease: 40 milligrams once a day for 6 months.

What should I do in case of an overdose with Fosamax?

If you have any of the following symptoms, you may be experiencing an overdose with Fosamax: indigestion, inflammation of the esophagus or stomach, ulcer, upset stomach. Seek medical attention as soon as possible.
